The book Paddle to the Amazon inspired my career as a documentary filmmaker. After reading this father and son canoe adventure, I was fortunate enough to establish a relationship with the lead paddler, Don Starkell, and to eventually earn his “Go ahead” to create a documentary of his story. Now, twelve years after my first conversation with Don Starkell, my documentary is nearing completion. I am honored to have been recently asked to be the principal consultant on the movie version of Paddle to the Amazon that is currently under way by another production company. Whatever forms the storytelling takes, it was the incredible characters and events of Paddle to the Amazon that incited me to pursue other real life stories in other corners of the world.
Paddle to the Amazon – the documentary – is being produced by Chris Forde / Split Rock Productions. This documentary will cover events from the past to present and include footage from Dana and his father’s 2001 canoe trip from Princeton, Iowa to Key West, Florida. Chris Forde has spent the past ten years documenting Don Starkell’s canoe adventures and has also been hired by Insight as a consultant for the movie.
